3. The Ancestors. 41" high, 21" wide. This is a painting of the whold assembly of the Taoist gods and Celestial Worthies, executed in the typical Chinese tradition. These are the essential characters on which a new Taoist adept must focus his mind during his devotions. The gods are seated in three levels: the Upper, Middle and Lower Tribunes. The Upper Tribune is reserved for the Three Pure Ones and their entourage, among them the Supreme Jade Emperor, Master of the Stars of the Central Heavens, The Jade Maidens, the Immortal Masters of Magic, the Treasurers of Wealth and Salaries, the Third Lady Empress Chao, the Castigator of diseases, and others. For more information e-mail me or see Jacques Lemoine's invaluable book, Yao Ceremonial Paintings. $450.
